Flights of Fancy: Short Stories on the Wing. 287 Harold's Cross Road (next to the Brick House Café).
June 16-26. Opening reception 6.30pm by invitation.

Each year, I hold an exhibition that is completely independent of the gallery system to focus on exploring what's essential in my work, free of external pressures. This is my Special Show where you can see me as I am.

As an artist, I'm not only interested in the imaginative and conceptual nature of my art; I'm dedicated to the craft side too. For me they're indivisible. I have always wanted to create things with my mind AND my hands. My influences are broad: Hopper, definitely; classical painters for their level of craft but also the surrealists. More strongly though, by so-called Pop Culture. I love great illustration work: From Mucha to graphic novels and the Hi-Fructose idiosyncratic art that comes out of the States. Cover art for the sci-fi novels of my youth. Dan Dare and the Trigan Empire!

Flights of Fancy: Short Stories on the Wing will be an eclectic mix of works drawn from my collection since the end of 2014. I hope you like them.

This is just a family event: me and my lovely wife Catherine - and whichever of my children I can dragoon into the project on the night. However -it was on precisely this basis that we successfully ran 2014's 52nd State of Mind exhibition. If you were there, I hope you remember what a ball we had. And I hope you enjoyed the rewards too.

I have no other source of funding. I don't petition the Arts Council for public funds. I believe that if my work is good, it will stand or fall on it's own merits according to YOU without an 'art expert's' intercession. I have work hanging in the British National Collection and published in the Wall Street Journal . That's enough kudos for me.

To make this happen, I will need to secure:

  • Public liability insurance (as this is a pop-up gallery).
  • A spotlight system.
  • Framing;
  • printing of invitations, a shopfront banner, A1 posters for a street sandwich-board.
  • A 16 page A5 catalogue and
  • postcards for rewards.
  • Most importantly: Wine and other refreshments along with glasses, etc for the opening party! Flowers for the gallery would be nice.

Time is short -normally Fundit.ie recommend a 30-40 day campaign in order not to annoy potential funders. I simply don't have that time as the venue had to be secured and (because it's free) the owners needed to be reassured about my bona fides and that there would be no paying renters left waiting. After that, it'll be all elbow grease to prepare.

Thank you for taking the time to read this. I'm grateful for that - this project could never get off the ground without help from people like you -but the rewards will hopefully be mutual: and a great event to boot!
