6th Annual Waterford Film Festival

By Waterford Film Festival

description

My name is Stephen Byrne. I am a filmmaker from Waterford. I have been working in film production for nearly ten years. Back in late 2006 I had just finished producing a short film in Dublin and I wanted to screen my latest film in my home city. After researching I discovered that there was no International Film Festival in Waterford.

I felt passionate about setting it up. I spent several months working on proposals, pitches and business plans and in early 2007 I had a meeting with the then CEO Monica Leech of the Waterford Chamber in which I made my full presentation to her.

From the very beginning Monica was excited about the project and she gave me her full support and pointed me in the right direction in setting up the festival.

I had several meetings with Waterford City Council Arts officer Conor Nolan and Gary Breen from Failte Ireland. Both of whom were very supportive and eager to help me get the project up and running. After about 6 months enough finance was raised to launch the festival.

By August of 2007 I was overwhelmed by the amount of submissions I received from filmmakers from around the World and 100 films were screened in our first year.

The festival gained great support from local and international business and in 2008 a Festival Management team was in place. The team consisted of me as Festival Director, Jaimie Dower as production manager who is also the Chairman of the Spraoi Festival and Conor Nolan who works with Jaimie and myself as a consultant and is part of the judging panel.

Every year the festival has received hundreds of submissions from filmmakers and in 2008 we introduced a screenplay competition which has also had great success. Several of the finalists and winners of the competition have gone onto to have their films produced. Each year about 80% of filmmakers attend the festival, some from as far as the U.S. and Canada. All have been hugely complementary about their experience.

In 2010 due to the economic downturn unfortunately our funding has been reduced as well as financial sponsorship from business and we had to scale back the event as a whole. We still have strong support and without it, the festival would not be able to carry on but we do struggle with our operational costs.

Everyone involved in the festival have a great belief in the event and it has a lot of potential to grow, in which we have plans for but we need more financial support to help make this happen.

This fund will help us towards some of our costs for the year: website maintenance, programme design/print, DVD authoring and event promotion. Your generous donation will help us reach our goals!

We would like to take this opportunity to thank our Core Funders, Waterford City Council, and all our sponsors for their continued belief in and support of the festival.
