‘Art without politics is a falsehood’ (Jesse Jones)

‘Art without politics is a falsehood’ (Jesse Jones)

The artist who represents Ireland at the Venice Biennale this year is Jesse Jones. “Tremble Tremble” is the title of her specially commissioned piece which features the renowned theatre artist Olwen Fouere.

Jones has written a very interesting article on the RTE website which touches on a lot of the themes that we have been exploring in the Concerning the Other project. The full text can be viewed at the link below but we include an extract here which seemed especially relevant.

" It was on this trip in 2017 that I understood art in a new and vital way. I now understand that art itself possesses possibilities to expose us to nuanced and complex ideas about humanity that can be afforded nowhere else. Art in its essence proposes the very simple idea that, in being affected by art we can be affected by each other. In a time when the world moves towards totalising and regressive positions that redraw old and forgotten hatreds, this matters.

... the National Pavilions of this year’s Venice Biennale told (a) story. One in which the saturation of politics proved a fertile and vital place for the articulation of anxiety around rising nationalism, through political empathy and solidarity with migrant populations, and a growing fear of new world orders and false truths in language and reality...

We know we live in deeply troubled and changing times, and we need every resource of understanding possible to navigate this unknown future. More importantly, we need a sense that we can, through collective acts of imagination, change it."

Well said Jesse! I think that you could say that the ten artists who are collaborating in the “Concerning the Other” project are exploring these very ideas and that their collaboration is producing many inspiring new pieces of art.

Concerning the Other - Cost of printing covered but more can join

Update posted on Tuesday 23rd May '17 @ 04:05:19

Great News! Thanks to the wonderful generosity of our initial Funders we have reached our first target – and the cost of printing out the virtual artworks has been pledged. We are delighted and very grateful to all of you.

In the meantime, we have been working on the plan to tour the exhibition of collaborative prints – both nationally and internationally – and we hope to be in a position to publish details shortly.

Any additional funding will be used to further these plans so - we are still gratefully accepting pledges. This is primarily to cover the considerable cost of transporting the works and also to fund the production of a good quality catalogue.

We hear that the opportunity to witness the development of the artworks was what initially attracted the Funders. This weekly development will continue until all 10 artists have worked on all 10 pieces. We find that the artists involved are particularly inspired by the process and are creating new works that are well outside of their comfort zones. If you become a Funder, you too will join that ‘Inner circle’ of the project. If you are already supporting the project, thanks again and don't hesitate to invite other people to join in.

Concerning the Other - Thanks to our new supporters and project kick-off

Update posted on Friday 19th May '17 @ 03:05:00

Dear funders,

Thank you again and a very special welcome to all of you who donated this week. It means a lot to all of us, involved in this collaborative art project. It will really be kicking off next week (on Monday, 22nd of May to be exact), when the initial image by each artist will be forwarded on to the next artist in the group.

And then, the following Monday (29th of May), we will be posting the reworked images into their respective albums on Facebook at:

We have created a master post on this page on Facebook from which you can access each of the albums but please note: you must copy and paste this link into your browser. Here is the special link:

Finally, don’t forget to let your friends know about this project and to ask them to join with us themselves! This is a special opportunity to witness the behind-the-scene stories of how great art is created, week by week. We have been using the hashtag #ConcerningTheOther on social media, so you can use it too.

And don’t forget you can always write to us, on the Facebook page or by email to: concerningtheother@gmail.com

We look forward to hearing from you.

Concerning the Other - Thank You - Follow the project

Update posted on Wednesday 10th May '17 @ 05:05:07

First of all, thank you so much for supporting this project.

We have created a page on facebook:

which will allow you to

- learn about each of the 10 artists

We created an album for that purpose, titled 'Concerning the Other - Meet the artists'
You can copy and paste this link in your browser to read about each artist and see an image representative of their current practice.

- follow each of the 10 series of works, from the initial image submitted by each artist to the final one

To that end, we created an album for each series, for instance

'From Susanne Wawra to Miriam McConnon thru 8 other artists'

Each of these albums contains only the initial image at the moment but we will add each subsequent image as it is reworked by the next artist.

The artists will commence working on these images on May 22, and will have 7 days to complete the next one. This is when you will discover them as we add them to the album.

If you would like to see all 10 initial images together we have also put them together in one album, titled

'Concerning the Other - The process & the initial image'

You can copy and paste this link in your browser to discover these images and read about them at
