Aidan has plied his trade in the underworld of North Dublin. In his youth he showed promise as an amateur boxer but fell foul of a life of vice. He arrives at an immovable crossroads and is forced to reflect upon his life and ask the fundamental question: how should a man live?
Another Billy Conn is a new one man show examining how we fall to disaster through the combination of personal failings and circumstances with which we cannot deal. And how we struggle to make sense of it all through resolution.
The play will be performed in The New Theatre in Temple Bar from May 16th to May 21st.
The script is finished and now its time to get cracking! I’m really excited about this production as it explores themes I love seeing in other works, namely dystopian visions, the process of self-realisation, struggle, choice and consequence, honesty.
This is a play that will resonate with anyone who has seen beyond the glossy postcard image of Dublin. For anyone struggling to make sense of their life; for anyone interested in boxing; for anyone with a passion for Dublin (good and bad); for anyone who knows anyone stuck in the horrors of addiction; for anyone who loves a beautiful malady. It is part urban drama and part horror story about a man who could have been another Billy Conn. (William David Conn was a popular Irish American Light Heavyweight Champion in the 1930’s)
I graduated from the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School ten years ago and have had the privilege of working as an actor since then. However, this is my first professional self – written piece and is therefore somewhat unchartered territory. I love the power of theatre to test the brain and enchant us at the same time and speaking as an actor there is no better medium.
If successful, the money raised will help cover the cost of the venue as well as allowing me to hire a creative and professional crew to help with the look and feel of the show. These include photographers, graphic designers, printers, lighting and stage technicians, as well as a director! It is my intention to bring you as professional and finessed a show as possible.
Your contribution can help me achieve something wonderful.
I truly appreciate any help you can afford me in this regard.
