Beacons - A Photobook

By Daragh Muldowney

Lake Baikal, in Siberia, is the largest freshwater lake on the planet, by volume. It is also one of the most biodiverse places as it is home to thousands of species of plants and animals, many of which are endemic to the region. In winter temperatures drop to as low as -40C and the entire lake is frozen enabling the locals to cross the lake. I have been travelling to Lake Baikal for the past 3 years compiling the images that document the beauty of the ice there and the small trees that mark out the road traversing the frozen lake. Photographing this ancient road system was a fascinating experience and I feel my documentation of this unusual and unique way of life is a beautiful human story that also highlights the immense natural beauty of Lake Baikal. I am very excited to share this story with you.

If this project is successful the money will be spent on the design, printing and delivery of 'Beacons' the book and the other rewards. The production and delivery of rewards can often be overlooked so I have budgeted a small amount that will help towards fulfilling these rewards.

Beacons will be my 3rd book that hopefully will be funded here on Fundit.
I was successful with 'Jewellery Box - Ireland's Hidden Gems' and 'Out of Thin Air' which won the 2015 FEP European landscape photobook of the year award.

I am working with Read That Image, the same designers that designed 'Out of Thin Air' so we have the experience to know how to deliver a project of this kind. The design is almost complete and we aim to have the book delivered 1 month before it is launched so we are in a good place in relation to fulfilling the rewards.

Timing with any project there is always a risk. To ensure this risk is minimised I am dealing with designers and printers I trust to deliver in time.
This will be my 3rd book so I am bringing that experience with me to ensure all timelines are met.

Producing a fine art photobook can be a costly affair. They can also be difficult in generating the required revenue through normal channels.
Crowdfunding is crucial for projects like this and provide the necessary platform that allows the artist to connect with their audience and generate the pre sales to fund the project. This is a campaign that needs to reach its target...if it does not reach the 100% by the campaign end date it is not funded and all pledged funds are returned to the individuals.

I would like to thank you for taking the time to read about my project. I hope you enjoyed the video. If successful, I am aiming to launch the book and exhibition on November 18th, COVID dependant. There is also a short documentary being made about my journey in creating Beacons. Please follow me for regular updates on my Facebook page.
