BitterSweet on The Tongue

By Domnick Sorace

description

My name is Domnick Sorace, a visual artist whose practice revolves around image-making in the mediums of photography, collage, and painting, to name but a few. I moved from Malta to Ireland back in 2017, after graduating with a First Class (Hons) B.A in Fine Arts. Subsequently after my move, I completed work experience as a Gallery Assistant & Administrator at Visual Centre of Contemporary Art, Co. Carlow, where I also worked as a Gallery Guide. In 2018 I was lucky to become a studio member with The Complex Arts Centre Dublin, having the space to produce new work. I also currently work at IMMA as a Visitor Engager.

This project consists of my first solo exhibition in Dublin, in which a new photographic series titled "BitterSweet on the Tongue" will be shown. The exhibition will take place around the week of 31st of January or the 7th of February 2020, in The Ground Gallery (part of The Complex) for the duration of a week. It will be composed of a series of 18 digital photographs printed A1, presented as diptychs. The series revolves around identifying universal feelings of desire and loss, the spectrum that exists between them and their union. It developed naturally by capturing images within my personal environments and of people I’m close to, grouped together due to their common mood and tension, wanting something back that is lost or close, but yet not close enough.

This first solo would be an important step in my artist career, having the opportunity to introduce myself to the Irish art scene, exhibiting within the country I choose and want to be based in. Like most emerging artists, I have applied for multiple funding schemes and open calls, without success. I decided to take matters into my own hands and give the best shot at trying to produce my first solo exhibition. With no funding resources and limited income, I'm relying on the kindness of people to help me make this exhibition possible.

The Ground Gallery has an experienced and dedicated team and have hosted and produced various exhibitions themselves. I have also acquired various skills from the above-mentioned past positions, and confident enough that I have gained the experiences needed to make this exhibition successful.
