Cé hÍ Máire Pháidín? Who Is MáirePháidín

By Ceri Garfield

description

Scéal saoil Máire Pháidín, bean ó Inis Meáin a chaith am i mBostún, áit inar fhoghlaim sí a cuid béarla, sular tháinig sí ar ais go dtí an oileán sna seascaidí, agus phós Páidín Maoilchiarán. Bhíodh sí ag coinneáil sagairt mar nach raibh teach sagart ann ag an am, agus sin mar a thosaigh sí ag déanamh B&B. Tá ochtó-ocht mbliana aici anois, agus cuimhne cruinn aici ar na cuairteoirí ar fad a tháinig chuici thar na bliana, ina measc na hUachtaráin Mary Robinson agus Mary McAleese.

Chaith mé fhéin cúig mhí ag fanacht le Máire i mbliana agus d'fhoghlaim mé mo chuid gaeilge uaithi. Thar na bliana bhí léachtóirí gaeilge, filí, Éireannaigh agus daoine ó níos faide i gcéin ag fanacht léi agus ag foghlaim uaithi. Táim ag iarraidh an clár seo a dhéanamh chun an cairdeas idir Máire agus a cuid cuairteoirí a léiriú, agus chun an grá atá aici do theanga agus do dhaoine a chur in iúl do mhuintir na tíre seo.

This documentary will introduce us to Máire, who through providing B&B in Inis Meáin since the 60s has befriended a wide variety of visitors, adventurers, writers, artists and scholars. She has inspired and taught Irish to people from all over Ireland and further afield. Máire is a wonderful story teller and at 88 has complete recollection of all the visitors to her house, amongst them the Irish Presidents Mary Robinson and Mary McAleese.

This will be filmed in Inis Meáin with beautiful views of the island, the stony landscape, the waves crashing against the cliffs.
Máire, sitting by the range in her house, will tell us about her time in Boston long ago, the fun she had and how she learned English while working there.
Máire will be joined by her daughter Maureen, on a visit to the island, and also their friend Proinsias, an Irish language lecturer who has visited with Máire more than 50 times over the years to chat and learn more of the old words and sayings in Irish.

Maureen will give us an insight into their family history and take us back to places on the island where her mother used to meet with friends as a young girl to learn and sing songs.

With Proinsias we'll walk to the high cliffs and forts of the island and see beautiful vistas of the wild Atlantic sea and neighbouring islands, while hearing what an influence Máire has been on him, and what wealth of language and folklore she has shared.

This documentary is a tribute to Máire and all those who inspire us to better appreciate our culture, heritage and traditions.

A student project for the Higher Diploma in Television Production (NemetonTV/WIT) The budget covers travel and production costs of filming on the island of Inis Meáin for five days.

Craoladh ar TG4 - Broadcast on TG4

Ag deireadh thiar thall a chomrádaithe tá ár gclár le bheith craolta ar TG4! Tá an-áthas orm a rá go mbeidh sé le feiceáil seachtain ó inniu, Dé hAoine 2ú Samhain ag 7:30in mar chuid den sraith 'Céad Seans'. Ba mhaith liom mo bhuíochas a ghabháil libh uilig as bhur gcuid tacaíochta agus muid ag cur an clár seo le chéile - murach sibhse ní bheadh tús curtha leis fiú! Táim cinnte go mbeidh clann agus cairde Mháire agus muintir Inis Meáin an-sásta í a fheiceáil ar an teilifís agus tá súil agam go mbainfidh sibh féin sásamh as an gcraoladh freisin. Is iontach an bhean í agus ba mhór an spóirt a bhí ag an bhfoireann seo uilig agus muid ag obair léi! Mura n-éireoidh libh a bheith ós comhair an teilí ar an Aoine seo chugainn bígí cinnte an clár a chuartú ar Seinnteoir TG4 ina dhiadh - 'Máire Pháidín, Cara Linn'. Scaipígí an scéal le bhur dtoil. Míle buíochas libh uilig :)

At long last my friends our programme is going to be broadcast on TG4! I'm delighted to say that it will be aired today week, Friday 2nd November at 7:30pm as part of the series 'Céad Seans' (First Chance). I'd like to thank you all for your support in our endeavours to put this show together - without you we wouldn't have even gotten it started! I'm sure Máire's family and friends and also the people of Inis Meáin will be delighted to see her on the telivision and I hope that you enjoy the broadcast also. She is a wonderful woman and our team had such a fantastic time working on this with her! If you can't be in front of the telly this coming Friday then be sure to search for the programme afterwords on the TG4 Player - 'Máire Pháidín, Cara Linn'. Please spread the word. Thank you all so much :)

Teideal Nua. A New Title.

Tá áthas orm a rá go bhfuil an clár beagnach déanta againn. Tá mo chomhpháirtí Brenda Dineen ag cur snas ar an eagarthóireacht faoi láthair. Táimíd tar éis scéal a dhéanamh atá níos pearsanta ná mar a bhí ar intinn againn i dtosach a dhéanamh.. Ar ndóigh tá deacrachtaí ag baint le scannánaíocht ar oileán san Atlantaigh fhiáin i mí Feabhra agus mar gheall ar an aimsir níor éirigh le haíonna áirithe an t-oileán a bhaint amach. Sa deireadh is éard atá sa chlár ná scéal faoi mé fhéin agus Máire agus an cairdeas atá idir an bheirt againn. Táim fíorbhuíoch de na comharsana a ghlac páirt sa chlár chomh maith agus do mhuintir Inis Meáin uilig a chur fáilte mór romhainn agus muid i mbun taifeadadh. De bharr na hathruithe seo sa scéal bhí teideal agus ráiteas nua ag teastáil: Máire Pháidín, Cara Linn, scéal faoi bhean óg atá tagtha abhaile go hÉireann lena leannán Meiriceánach, agus an caidreamh atá acu le Máire Pháidín, gaeilgeoir ina hochtóidí. Tá B&B á dhéanamh ag Máire ina teach in Inis Meáin, na hoileáin Árainn ó na caogaidí ar aghaidh. Lena pearsantacht láidir agus an grá atá aici do dhaoine agus do theanga spreag sí cuairteoirí ó gach cearn den domhan chun gaeilge a fhoghlaim - an lánúin óg Ceri agus Pat ina measc. Tá an clár seo déanta in ómós do Mháire agus gach duine a chuireann meas ionann ar ár dteanga, oidhreacht agus traidisiúin. Clár beathaisnéise 25 nóiméid. Suite in Inis Meáin. I’m happy to say that the programme is almost finished. My partner Brenda Dineen is currently putting the finishing touches to the edit. We’ve ended up making more personal a programme than we had initially intended to make. Of course there are difficulties in filming on an island in the wild Atlantic in February and due to weather some guests could not make it to Inis Meáin. In the end the programme we have made is about myself and Máire and our friendship. I’m very grateful to the neighbours that also took part, as well as to the people of Inis Meáin who welcomed us and our camera equipment with open arms. As a result of these changes in the story a new title and description is needed: Máire Pháidín, Cara Linn (Our Friend) tells the story of a young Irish woman recently returned home with her American boyfriend, and their relationship with Máire Pháidín, a native Irish speaker in her late eighties. Máire has provided B&B in her home on Inis Meáin, the Aran Islands since the 50s. Her lively character and love of people and language has inspired visitors from all over the world to learn her native tongue - amongst them the returned couple Ceri and Pat. This documentary is a tribute to Máire and all those who inspire us to better appreciate our language, heritage and traditions. 25 minute biopic. Filmed in Inis Meáin.

Ag taifead go luath, Recording soon!

Go raibh míle maith agaibh go léir - táim an-sásta go bhfuaireamar an méid a bhí uainn agus tuilleadh. Beimid ag dul go hInis Meáin an tseachtain seo chugainn le taifead agus beidh mé i dteangmháil libh tar éis é sin. Thank you all so much - I'm very happy that we received the amount we needed and more. We will be going to Inis Meáin this coming week to record and I will be in contact with you after that. Le gach dea-ghuí, Ceri.

Beagnach Ann! Almost There!

Dia daoibh go léir agus go raibh míle maith agaibh as bhur tacaíocht - táím ag déanamh iontas faoin méid cabhair a thug gach duine dom. Táimid beagnach ann, níl ach rud beag eile le bailiú. Más maith libh an scéal a scaipthe faoin togra seo, bheinn buíoch daoibh arís! Faoi láthair táim ag réiteadh rudaí le haghaidh an siút i mí Feabhra, agus ag tnúth go mór le dul ar ais go hInis Meáin. Beidh mé ag scríobh ar ais chugaibh le linn an tréimhse léiriúcháin le tuilleadh nuachta, ach idir an dá linn seo podchraoladh daoibh - táim an-bhuíoch d'Eoin Ó Conchúir as an agallamh seo a dhéanamh liom ar a phodchraoladh. http://www.bitesizeirishgaelic.com/blog/podcast033/ Hello everybody, thank you so much for your support, I'm amazed by the amount help everybody has given me. We're nearly there, there's only another small bit to be raised. If you would like to spread the word about this project I'd be grateful to you all again! At the moment I'm preparing for the shoot in February and really looking forward to going back to Inis Meáin. I'll be writing back to you during production with more news but in the meantime here's a podcast for you - I would like to thank Eoin Ó'Conchúir for doing this interview with me for his podcast: http://www.bitesizeirishgaelic.com/blog/podcast033/
