Oh yes you will!

Come and support THE panto of the season! It's packed full of local talent, a cast of over 80 kids and teenagers, and you'll spot friends and neighbours (and maybe a councillor or two...) giving it their all as the much loved cast of Cinderella. It'll be a ball!

What is the show?

Yes, it's panto time and this year it's the rags to riches tale, Cinderella.  The most popular of all Christmas pontomimes is given a modern make-over, a strong community cast, and a magical setting in a space that will be transformed into dungeons, castles and the thrill of a ball!  Every two years, The Source Arts Centre in Tipperary produces a community Christmas show (see the video of The Pied Piper, 2009) and this year it has commissioned Thurles born director, Donal Gallagher, to write and direct a new updated version of this classic pantomime.

When is the show?

Seven performances will take place from Wednesday 14th to Sunday 18th December, 2011 at 7pm, with 3pm matinees on Saturday and Sunday.  All performances will take place in The Source Arts Centre, Thurles, Co. Tipperary.

What will the show be like?

The traditional element of the pantomime will not be ignored as all the usual characters will be playing their part.  The Ugly Sisters, the ever optimistic Buttons, the Fairy Godmother and, of course, Prince Charming will all be making appearances.  The main cast will be accompanied by over 80 local teenagers and children (the youngest of whom is 4!) who will whisk you away in the whirl of the waltz to the wonderful world of Cinderella.  There will be many modern touches packed into this specially written script, and local contemporary references will place it firmly in the heart of the community.  The production will be enhanced by song and dance, comic commentary on current affairs, and more than a pinch of classic panto humour!  This seasonal show will be produced to the highest production values and will be a real opportunity for the local Tipperary community to get involved as participants and spectators without having to travel to Dublin, Cork or beyond!

What will your donation do?

Money raised through this campaign will be put towards the writing of this very special take on a classic tale.  It will help pay for costumes, set design, materials and all the backstage magic that makes showtime so special!  The Source is supporting the production from its central budget, but additional funding is needed to ensure that Cinderella gets her man!

So a sprinkle of fairy dust and a big thank you to everyone who supports us! Help bring the magic of Cinderella to Tipperary this Christmas!

Who's who?

Thurles born Donal Gallagher is Artistic Director of Asylum Productions and a freelance director whose work has been seen in Ireland, Britain and Germany.  Donal directed the brilliant tennis comedy  Love All, for the Clonmel Junction Festival and ran The Source's Inkubator new writing project for three years.  The Source is thrilled to welcome him to Thurles for his first full production in his home town!

Local solicitor Michelle O'Connell will be Assistant Director and Siobhan King will be the choreographer.  The set and light design will be done by The Source's in-house technician, Arno Nauwels.  The stunning local cast includes: Emily Matthews (Cinderella), Jack Rossiter (Buttons), Jacob Keogh (Prince Charming), Frank Tuohy (Fairy Godmother), Maria O'Grady (the Wicked Stepmother) and Pat Strapp (Bertie Ahern) to name but a few!

Help us have the Ball of the year!

The pressure's really on now! We've very little time left to raise the balance on our campaign, and it's not looking good.... PLEASE can you do a final push and ask friends, neighbours and family to donate as much as they can to get us across the line by midnight on Wednesday? We really are desperate. Fact! Rehearsals are continuing, and everyone is being measured for their costumes. Songs are being learnt, and a toilet has been made.... (a key prop... honestly!)... Donal, the director's column starts this week. So here's a little preview... Directors Diary A Christmas Panto... with serial killers? July: It starts with a phone call.... It’s ‘that Mad English Woman’ from The Source Arts Centre – ‘how would you like to come back to your home town to write and direct the Christmas Panto?’ I’m equally chuffed and terrified. In the 15 years I’ve worked in professional theatre I’ve never had a show in Thurles. You can’t hide from an audience like that. Some of them know where I live. And panto? Mostly I’ve directed plays about psychos, serial killers and sex offenders - not exactly child-friendly festive fare. The woman is clearly nuts. But she seems to have some bizarre misplaced faith in my comic abilities. I’ve just co-written and directed my first comedy - the true-life story of Ireland’s first Wimbledon finalist who also (surprise, surprise) murdered and dismembered a Swedish Heiress in 1907. I kid you not. But lots of people laughed, and we won Judges Award at the Junction Festival, so maybe I can write something funny? (Oh No You Can’t!). With our first baby ready to sprout, it seems an ideal opportunity to spend more time with doting grandparents-to-be in Thurles. So, Yes – sure – why not? I hang up the phone with a horrible realisation... I’ve never actually seen a panto. But we all know the plot, right? It can’t be that hard, can it? August: Oh Yes It Can.... what was I thinking??? After 4 days and nights slaving over a hot laptop I’ve written “Act 1 Scene 1. The Hairy Fairy Godmother enters wearing a pink Tutu and a black leather biker Jacket”. Shakespeare, it is not.... So get the Tipp Star this week to read the rest! And our thanks to all who have supported us to date, including our latest additions to The Source Friends & Supporters Club: Liam & Kathleen Ryan Thank you to you all and please spread the word! Doomsday is upon us!

Will we make it to the Ball?

As we go into the last 6 days of our campaign, we've raised 54% and the response to a cry for help yesterday was wonderful! So our huge thanks to those of you who set up an account and donated - you are brilliant! And huge thanks, too, to those who gave in cash or cheque through The Source Friends & Supporters Club: Majella Coakley Rowena Keaveney Neil J. Butler & Co. Pinewood Laboratories LTD / Damien Martin The director, Donal Gallagher, starts a weekly column in the Tipperary Star next week - so watch out for that! Music rehearsals have started, so now the kids are dancing AND singing! And if you haven't checked out the windows of the office recently.... top floor.... Do spread the word re the campaign. It's the 'all or nothing school of funding'. We want the ALL not the nothing! Thanks again for the fabulous support. It means a great deal to us.

We need a real push!

Heartfelt thanks to those who have given either directly through setting up a Fundit account, or through The Source Friends & Supporters group - Susan Troy Michael Lowry TD Valerie Beamish Sharon Quin Karen Hynes Deirdre Mason Toby Cullen Catriona O'Connor Frank Rafter Brid Ryan Doreen O'Shea Michael & Josephine O'Dwyer But with the deadline of 10th November drawing near, we haven't even reached 50% of our target. PLEASE spread the word and ask your freinds, family and colleagues to donate. Remember, if we don't reach the full €4,000 we don't get a penny. Rehearsals are flying along and the cast totals 110 local people of all ages! The creative energy and kids singing and dancing for their lives inspires us all, and the panto of all pantos is really taking shape! We're starting to work on the set and costume design, but lack of funds is really holding us back.... Please see if you can help us raise more funds and realise our vision for the show! Thank you to you all!

Thank you... and can you help spread the word?

Yes, week two is over and rehearsals are in full swing! We've raised a fantastic near-25% with 28 days to go. Our huge thanks to all funders who've set up a Fundit account. Remember you won't be charged unless we reach our target! Thanks, too, to those who've given cash under The Source Friends & Supporters Club: - Breda Gallagher - Seamus Hanafin - Tom Barry - Melanie Scott - Pauline Dwan - Jean Forbes Cooke We love you all! But please, can you help spread the word and get more friends, relatives, work colleagues to give to the campaign? We have a local cast of over 100 and not a costume in sight. Not a stick of a set. Not a song to sing. And certainly no shoe for Cinderella herself. Please help us meet our target by spreading the word... Or poor Cinderella will languish in the kitchens, unloved....

Campaign first week is over!

Yes, the first week of our Fund.It campaign for Cinderella is over! Thanks to 5 wonderful people we have raised a total of €520 - not bad! Rehearsals started this morning (Saturday 1st October) and the script is hilarious! The cast were in stitches and think the Director, Donal, is truly mad! So spread the word. This promises to be the panto to beat all pantos! Get your friends and fellow panto fanatics to donate. The campaign has to finish on 10th November and it's all or nothing - so thank you so much for giving and please tell your friends, family and colleagues to help us reach our target! Onwards!
