To celebrate our 10 year Anniversary as a school we wanted to aspire towards our motto of "Aimsigh do Realt Eolais." After much heated debate we decided to attempt one of the most critically acclaimed musicals of all time - Billy Elliot.
Unfortunately as a still relatively young school and a community with no history of musical theatre, we don't have a large group of accomplished enough past pupils to play in our band and that's where we hope you might help us out. The show requires a 10 piece group of musicians to play the score, of which we are proud to have selected 4 from among our current students. What we hope to do is add professional musicians to both complete the group and provide their expertise in working with our student musicians.
Billy Elliot will be our fifth production and our first since the Irish Amateur Premier of Rock of Ages in 2016. We aim to produce a show of the highest standard that the community can be proud of, that is led by our students and driven by the hope to create long lasting memories for all involved.
Our students by and large have no musical theatre background or training and few would pursue any extra curricular activities in the arts. That's what makes this challenging experience all the more worthwhile!
A lot of schools have access to some supports for musicals or plays - a stage, former students, financial support from large local businesses, a tradition of students involved in the arts. As a small community and still a new school we have none of these and so to ensure a show that is enjoyable and of a high standard show we are seeking further support through this fund it campaign.
A professional band would have a transformative impact on our production and students. To have six skilled musicians working directly with four of our own student musicians (14-17 year olds) would give them an experience of a lifetime that will bring a whole new set of skills to their playing. A professional band also gives us the opportunity to perform Billy Elliot to a live band, safe in the knowledge that our students performing on stage are in good hands.
Thank you all for your consideration and for your continued support - we hope to do you all proud!!
