COLLECTED STORIES by Donald Margulies

By Then This Theatre

The place: Greenwich Village.
The question: Do artists survive by devouring one another?

Ruth Steiner is the imperious bohemian author of acclaimed works of fiction. Lisa Morrison is the callow and eager student who dreams of literary stardom. Lisa offers Ruth her services as personal assistant, and before you can say "All About Eve," the younger woman has begun appropriating secrets from Ruth’s glory days to rocket herself to success.

Donald Margulies, winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and one of America's most widely-acclaimed theatrical voices.

A year ago, at Clontarf’s Viking Theatre, we presented The Margulies Trilogy, a reading series of three of the playwright's major works.

Associate dramaturg Tanya Dean facilitated post-show discussions with the audience each night. Based on the ecstatic response to Collected Stories, we decided to stage a full production.

Over the last year, we have built up relationships with the venues where the production will be presented, with the creative artists who will bring the production to life, and with producer Breda Cashe, who has mentored our production process.

After our acclaimed production of The Yellow Wallpaper, and our celebrated series of public readings of classic and contemporary plays, Then This Theatre brings a rarely-produced American masterwork to Irish audiences. Led by director Aoife Spillane-Hinks (Creditors), Collected Stories features a stellar cast: Deirdre Donnelly (Donegal), a high-powered veteran of Ireland’s great theatres, joins forces with Irish Times Theatre Award-winner Maeve Fitzgerald (Bailegangaire) in this two-woman tour-de-force. Featuring two rising star designers, Hanna Bowe (Glowworm) and Barbara McCarthy (Something Unspoken), our production of Collected Stories will showcase collaborations between great artists at various stages of their careers.

Then This Theatre is delighted to be presenting a three-week run of Collected Stories throughout the Dublin area. After opening in the Viking Theatre in Spring 2017, we will tour to several other venues, including the Civic Theatre Tallaght and the Riverbank Arts Centre in Newbridge, Kildare.

WHY €6,500?

While we have raised some money through venue guarantees, we need additional funds in order to cover essential production costs:

€2,750 - design/technical costs
€2,750 - administrative costs (such as rights/insurance)
€1,000 - promotion and publicity

If we exceed our goal, we'll be able to secure additional funds to expand the scope of our designers' resources and to increase the reach of our advertising campaign.

As an independent company, taking on the financial and creative risks of a new production, we rely on the generosity of donors like you to make this work possible. The €6,500 we hope to raise through your support is an essential part of bringing a this challenging and engaging American classic to life.

Your time, consideration, and support mean so much to us. Thank you.

Critics, audiences, and Joe Duffy agree--COLLECTED STORIES is a hit!

Dear friends, Since opening at the Viking on 15th March, we have been enjoying a wonderful run of COLLECTED STORIES in Clontarf. Audiences and reviewers alike have had great things to say about the show. The Red Curtain Review hailed it as "a production of a clever play that is humorous and thoughtful, and thoroughly terrific..." and Exeunt Magazine praised "a smartly restrained staging by Spillane-Hinks," "Ní Neachtain’s brilliantly agitated and blunt Ruth," and "Hanna Bowe’s suave apartment set." Legendary Irish broadcaster Joe Duffy proclaimed the show to be "sophisticated, layered, funny, novel, with two of our greatest actors Bríd Ní Neachtain and Maeve Fitzgerald." It's hard to believe that we only have two performances left in the Viking--tonight and tomorrow evening. Then we're on to the Civic Theatre in Tallaght to perform 27th-29th March. If you are in town and haven't yet been in, we hope you'll join us, whether this month at the Viking or Civic, or next month at Smock Alley, the Riverbank, or the Dolmen. If you're in Dublin today, get outside and enjoy the sunshine! (And then come see a play tonight!) Cheers, Aoife, Maeve, and the whole team

Almost there...and new tour dates!

Dear friends, Greetings! Aoife here, co-Artistic Director of Then This Theatre and director of COLLECTED STORIES. We are in our final week of rehearsals for COLLECTED STORIES, before opening at the Viking Theatre Clontarf next week. It has been a remarkable rehearsal process so far, with daily revelations of just how masterful this script is. No word is wasted, no stage direction carelessly thrown in. With Bríd and Maeve, I am blessed with two actors whose good humour, talent, and indefatigability make every day exhilarating. We are all very excited for our opening night, next Wednesday 15 March (previews 13 & 14 March). In other news, I'm delighted to report that we have added new dates to our tour: after our dates in Clontarf, Tallaght, Temple Bar, and Newbridge, we will run at the Dolmen Theatre in Cornelscourt 24-29 April! That means you can see the show in five different places over the next two months: Viking Theatre at The Sheds (13-25 March), Civic Theatre (27-29 March), Smock Alley Theatre (3 & 4 April), Riverbank Arts Centre (5 April), and the Dolmen. For more information on our week at the Dolmen, visit http://www.dolmentheatre.ie. We've got a big few weeks ahead. I hope you'll join us at some point. Warmly, Aoife

The show must go on!

The show must go on! We're sorry to announce that due to illness, Deirdre Donnelly will not be playing Ruth Steiner in our upcoming production of COLLECTED STORIES. We cannot thank Deirdre enough for her support of this project since our first reading in the Viking in 2015, and we wish her the very best. We are delighted to announce that Bríd Ní Neachtain has come on board to play Ruth. Bríd is well-known to theatre and television audiences alike, and her most recent work includes the title role in THE REMAINS OF MAISIE DUGGAN at the Peacock Theatre, Catwoman in BY THE BOG OF CATS at the Abbey Theatre, and Belinda Mulrooney in the TG4 mini-series AN KLONDIKE. We are fired up to start rehearsals on 20th February. Warmly, Aoife & Maeve

Great news!

Dear Supporters, We’ve got some great news: over the weekend, we reached our fundraising target for COLLECTED STORIES! It’s hard to describe how good it felt to refresh the Fund:it page on Sunday evening and see that we had raised €6500. And it’s all thanks to you: 90 people willing to put their belief in this work into action. Now we have an exciting opportunity: to go beyond 100%. Raising more than €6500 would allow us to provide further resources to our design and production team, and to expand our promotional campaign to ensure that this production reaches as wide an audience as possible. In these final two days of the campaign, can you help take us even further? Now is the perfect time to share our Fund:it page on facebook and twitter, or to add an extra few euro to your donation on the site. This is a wonderful position in which to find ourselves, and we couldn’t have done it without you. Thank you so much. We're looking forward to the work ahead. Warmly, Aoife & Maeve

Nearly there!

Dear supporters, With a week to go to the end of our campaign, we have just hit 85% of our Fund:it target. Thank you so much to everyone who has taken a leap of faith in supporting the production. Every day, this campaign is both stressful and heartening. But every time we’re in danger of losing heart, another pledge comes in. It is impossible to overstate how much each donation boosts our spirits, and how grateful we are for your support. We only have ten days to go, and almost €1000 still to raise. As you know, unless a Fund:it project is fully funded, it doesn’t get a penny. You’ve done a huge amount already, but please help us to spread the word by talking about it to your friends, and by posting the Collected Stories project page link on Twitter and Facebook. With your help we’ll get there. In the meantime, thank you again for your support—we are incredibly grateful for your faith and generosity. Warmly, Aoife and Maeve
