A fair retail fairytale? Don't make me laugh!
Welcome to the world of fashion retail, filled with fake smiles, sales targets and bunions where “the customer is always right”. Four shop employees. One day on the shop floor. A day so jam-packed it is bursting at the seams, and the workers feel as disposable as the clothes they sell. A whirlwind solo show by Stage UK Best Solo Performer nominee in the Edinburgh Fringe 2012. What's all the fuss about these new contracts anyway? Come delve in the hidden world behind the super friendly smiles of Macken’s Department Store. Laugh, weep and scream! Ka-chinka-ching!
COUNTER CULTURE has been invited to perform in the Edinburgh Fringe at St. John's Theatre as part of the JUST Festival. This Edinburgh run will be co-produced by Morag Neil - www.scarybiscuits.com.
'A kaleidoscopic story...pitch-perfect O’Kelly' - Irish Theatre Magazine
'Moves flawlessly from belly laughs to breaking the audience's hearts’ – Liberty
'Expertly performed' - No More Work Horse
Selected as a 2014 Theatre Highlight by the Irish Independent
COUNTER CULTURE was first developed as a Show in a Bag production for the Dublin Fringe Festival 2013, as part of the artist development initiative created by Dublin Fringe Festival, Fishamble: The New Play Company and Irish Theatre Institute to resource theatre makers & actors. Since then, it has been growing and touring around the country, bringing with it the mad world of Macken's department store - a world filled with bizarre customers, fake smiles and the new zero hour contracts. Macken's will be opening its doors in Edinburgh this August, but it comes at a price, and we need your help to get it there!
The costs of bringing a show to Edinburgh are huge - no mid-summer sale on here unfortunately! Your contribution will go towards providing transport and accommodation in Edinburgh, as well as the essential Fringe publicity and marketing for the show. With zero hour contracts causing quite a stir in Ireland and the UK at the moment, we think its the ideal time for this show to expand and open its first UK branch at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Thank you for visiting our Fundit page and taking the time to read about COUNTER CULTURE!
We reached our target! This fair-retail fairytale is heading to the Edinburgh Fringe!

We are still reeling from the excitement of it all, but are delighted to announce that we made it!!! COUNTER CULTURE has reached its target, and will be bringing the world of Macken's Department Store to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival this August! A mighty thank you to all our funders, with six hours to go on the Fundit campaign we made it home and dry thanks to all you wonderful people :) Really excited to bring this story of solidarity and workers' rights to the Fringe, and thanks so much for helping us get there. As Mackens' doorman Johnno would say - fair play to ya! :)
