Digitally Fabricated Community Structure

By University College Dublin

description

WHO AM I?
I am a Masters of Architecture Student in University College Dublin. Our research group is 'Agency'. We take a bottom-up approach to spatial problems, we get 'stuck-in' and we believe architects can play an active role in societal change. With this in mind I am approaching housing in the city, in particular the regeneration of voluntary housing estates. In collaboration with residents, community groups, procurement bodies, and manufacturers, I am exploring the potential for digital fabrication as part of the regeneration process of existing housing estates.

ABOUT DOLPHIN HOUSE?
Dolphin House is Dublin’s second largest voluntary housing estate. Built in the 1950’s the building stock in Dolphin has been the subject of planned regeneration and work is on-going by the community to make this regeneration happen. It is badly needed. There are over 900 residents living in this community and there is a lack of creative community amenity and play facilities. As a result many children spend their day confined inside their flats with no exercise, play opportunities or interaction with other children. For more information on the on-going community work being done in Dolphin House. For more information on the history of Dolphin, please follow this link.

WHAT IS DIGITAL FABRICATION?
This simply is using automated machines to make the pieces that will be put together to create the structure. Follow this link to see it in action by ‘CreativeCNCDesign’

ABOUT THE STRUCTURE?
The structure will be digitally fabricated from wood which has been donated by Coillte. By using this process it enables us to manufacture the structure in a flexible and cost effective way. This allows the structure to be adaptable and moveable to the communities needs over time. The structure will provide a space for performance, community games, creative work groups, community organisations, the lord mayor and activists to project their voice.

WHY BUILD THIS?
Taking a bottom-up-approach in order to be a catalyst for change, the act of building this structure encourages community involvement and interaction. This structure will be part of a Rialto community festival and will provide the local community groups with a stage to project their voice.

WHY FUND IT?
Your fund will pay for the cutting of the material with the CNC Machine. This will make this project happen.
