Discovery Acapella Album

By Discovery Gospel Choir

description

This year is Discovery Gospel Choir’s 10th Anniversary! It has been an exhilarating journey so far and we have been so inspired by the wonderful people and music that we have encountered along the way. So, to celebrate this important milestone we want to write and record our second album!

As a choir and a collective, we fuse gospel, world, African & Irish sounds to create an expression of interculturalism that is infectious and incredibly powerful. We believe our truly soulful music offers something of real significance and beauty! Our new album will showcase the richness of this diversity, taking songs from Romania, Haiti, Congo, China, America, Zimbabwe and Ireland and arranging them for a capella voices and percussion. We are excited to be collaborating with Irish musician Rónán O'Snódaigh & percussionists Gabriel Akujobi (from Nigeria) and Cote Calmet (from Peru). With their contribution, this album will be a real celebration and colourful expression of music in Ireland today.

Some of Discovery’s highlights over the last 10 years include performing on stage with artists such as Stevie Wonder, Sinéad O'Connor, Gemma Hayes and the Blind Boys of Alabama (who think we are ‘Phenomenal!’). We regularly collaborate with Irish fusion band Kíla, sean nós singer Liam O'Maonlaí and with Celtic Woman and we have worked for Disney for the launch of The Lion King in Ireland. We have also had the honor of performing for some fascinating public figures such as President Michael D. Higgins, Rev Dr Jesse Jackson, the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu (who said we are ‘a fantastic choir’). Yes, we know we are bragging but aren’t you impressed?!

The album will be released in June 2014 and our Musical Director, Aisling McCormick is working us hard to perfect our sound. We can’t wait to get stuck into the recording studio in early May and we are thrilled to be working again with producer Shea Fitzgerald (who has worked with the likes of Paul Brady and Kíla). None of what we have achieved so far would have been possible without the generous support of people like you and by funding us now you can play a vital part in bringing this project to life. In return we have some lovely treats to say thank you – check them out below!

Amazing Experience!!

There are just under two weeks left to support Discovery’s new acapella album through Fundit! It’s been an amazing experience so far – one that we are extremely excited and hopeful about. It has given us the chance to think about how we are connected to others in this world and the powerful impact that those connections can have. It has really brought home that we do not exist in isolation and we are amazed and so thankful for the fantastic people who have gotten behind us. Thank you! Please keep sharing the page and telling people about this project!!

Our rehearsals have been busy but productive. We've decided to add a song from Mali to the album - "Kayra Sillo" and we're translating a well known spiritual into Irish ... not giving away too many secrets
