EAST OF BERLIN, Lee Wilson’s Irish debut

By Joanna Crawley

description

ABOUT THE PROJECT

Hanna Moscowitch’s internationally celebrated play EAST OF BERLIN is a visceral ride through past and present, heartbreak, humour and our need for restorative justice.

“…those looking for real theatre, the kind that stretches your heart and your brain, will be well-rewarded”?
Toronto Star

Rudi, growing up in 1970s Paraguay, always assumed that his father was just a German troop physician during the Second World War … until Rudi’s friend Hermann inadvertently revealed the truth.
What happens when you have to drastically rewrite your own story?
How do you go on as the son of a monster?

After a formidably successful run in The Lir Academy of Dramatic Art, Lee Wilson’s production is coming to Project Arts Centre in January, 2016.

WHY DO WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT?

EAST OF BERLIN is not only a great play, but it’s also a showcase for recent graduates of The Lir’s MFA directing (Lee Wilson) and design (Ger Clancy) programme. After a big success as their MFA Showcase production, EAST OF BERLIN has been picked up professionally by the Project Arts Centre. In addition to an important Canadian play and playwright being brought to Ireland; it is a rare glimpse of a theatre school show that has been picked up for professional production.

Lee after years of artistic successes in Canada (including a nomination for the Christopher Plummer Fellowship Award for his outstanding contribution to the classics and Shakespeare in performance) is opening a new chapter in his career in Europe. He was the founding artistic director of Resurgence Theatre Company in Newmarket, Ontario, Canada; known as a breeding ground for young talent and for its innovative productions of Shakespeare. Lee has been the assistant to The Tempest film and stage production starring Christopher Plummer at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival. He was an Intern Director at the Shaw Festival, the Resident Director in the Birmingham Conservatory at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival, and started off his career as a member of the Soulpepper Training Company studying acting, design, and directing with his mentor Robin Phillips.

Ger Clancy works in theatre, film, visual and spectacle arts. He has lectured in Three Dimensional Design, Model making and Digital Art, IADT for over a decade. Most recently he designed a set for Me Too! produced by Barnstorm, Paul Curley’s BAKE! and Eccles Theatre THE WINDSTEALERS.

EAST OF BERLIN is their first professional partnership together. It combines their passion for a theatre that asks difficult questions and talks to us through all of the senses.

With your support we’ll be able to cover the costs of the plays rights, and build a set that is an architecturally complex combination of a courtroom and Auschwitz.
