Every Little Step…the Rhythm of Hope ‘12

By Dance Theatre Of Ireland

When you have tried and tried, and you feel you can't go on…what do you do next?
When you've reached rock bottom...how do you go on?

From their acclaimed premiere in New York, Dance Theatre of Ireland and Soul Steps (USA) bring a foot-stomping, body-clapping, energizing experience in "Every Little Step ... the Rhythm of Hope". In their hottest work to date, an inspiring cast of 7 performers combine African-American Stepping, Irish and Modern dance and storytelling in a positively uplifting show that spreads a smile and leaves you feeling powerful. "persuasive and rousing" (New York Times)

"Every Little Step…the Rhythm of Hope" draws on sheer human energy, powerful rhythms and personal stories of hope. Through body percussion, spoken word and call and response (including the audience), there is a physical musicality and engagement that drives the performance, offering a connecting and uplifting experience. Clever, joyous, personal and highly energized.

With this Irish tour we hope to reach over 20 venues, including Dublin and regional theatres, schools and community settings. We will bring performances and participatory workshops to diverse audiences, sharing a unique expression of cultural heritage and stories of hope. Breaking down the “fourth wall” between audience and performers, "Every Little Step" appeals to audiences of all ages, offering an engaging experience of rhythm in dance.

At a time when individuals and communities are often experiencing great hardships, "Every Little Step" offers a refreshing perspective on perseverance and connects us with the roots of cultural expression. With primal rhythms and collective stories, drawn from life’s settings, the performance gives us a way (and a time) to feel our connection with each other and in so doing, the power in ourselves – the heartbeat we share.

Please help us to bring this extraordinary project to people across Ireland, some of whom cannot afford the admission price.

We are offering rewards that give you the opportunity to directly participate in the invigorating activity of "Every Little Step", a unique collaboration that rejuvenates as well as entertains; revels as well as reveals. We will be hugely grateful for any help you can give.

"Every Little Step…the Rhythm of Hope" receives some support from the Arts Council’s Touring and Dissemination of Work program and DLR Arts. However, as an international co-production, costs are high and we still need over €6,000 to reach as many people as we can while we have both companies together in Ireland Nov 2 – Dec 2, 2012.

The tour includes Draoicht Blanchardstown, Pavilion Theatre Dun Laoghaire, Hawks Well Sligo, University of Limerick, Siamsa Tire Tralee, Monkstown Educate Together, Mermaid Arts Centre Bray, Axis Ballymun, Town Hall Theatre Galway and more as finance permits.

Please join us. Thank you.

"persuasive and rousing" (New York Times)

Mission Accomplished

Dear Funders We have just completed a very satisfying, inspiring and well-received nationwide tour of Every Little Step...the Rhythm of Hope. Thanks to YOU. Thanks to you we gave 19 performances in theatre venues, primary schools, secondary schools and gave workshops along the way to people ages 11-70. Rhythm and Dance are truly great agents of connection and joy. With the feedback we got, we can say with conviction that the piece does what we had hoped and intended...it gives people a lift, puts them in touch with the pulse of their own strength and fans the flame of hope. Here are a selection of press quotes, followed by Audience Member's comments: Press Quotes: “They are the music as well as the dance…a joyful… enunciation of possibility and positivity… …the high-jinks gymnastics of contemporary dance moves punctuated with breakdance spins….leave with a smile” The Irish Times “The fact that your heartbeat keeps going day in and day out is, in itself, something to be cheerful about. This is the way you'll start thinking after seeing Every Little Step ... the Rhythm of Hope. The performers confront the reasons why, in the face of adversity, we continue to persevere.” **** Metro Herald “With recourse to contemporary, Irish, break and African-American step dance, the melding of the different forms also speaks loudly of the way dance can unite” Metro Herald "Percussive beat is passed throughout the entire auditorium ...that brings every audience member to life, and eventually, to their feet… This refreshing show strikes a perfect note for Ireland today...See this fun and life-affirming show for yourself. You will walk out of the theatre feeling so much the better for having got yourself on a wavelength with this body-tapping, percussive world” VULGO Audience Comments: “Absolutely refreshing” Jean Butler, former Riverdance principle dancer “Really awesome!” Margaret Aylward Community College Transition Year student, Pavilion Theatre “You should bring this show everywhere” Audience Member, Pavilion Theatre “Great fun!
