Keep Sketch Notebooks

By Alex Synge

Keep Sketch is a small, collaborative design and illustration project, inspired by traditionally-styled stationary, doodling, burning paper planes and doing things you shouldn't be doing. In 2010, we made a small run of natural wood hexagonal pencils with silver ferrules and white erasers, foil-blocked with the words "Keep Sketch". Now, we're planning to produce a series of limited-edition Keep Sketch notebooks, featuring covers designed by four of our favourite Irish designers, and we need your help to make this happen.

Keep Sketch aims to support and promote our favourite Irish designers by producing finely-crafted, beautiful and practical stationary made in close collaboration with them. If you could help us out in any way, and pledge whatever amount you can, you will be playing a huge part in making this project come to life. As well as being happy in the knowledge that you are supporting something great, you'll also get the chance to pick up some very special and exclusive rewards, including Keep Sketch notebooks, pencils, tote-bags and badges.

We want to make a series of simple, but beautiful, rough-and-ready notebooks for your back pocket. Notebooks for filmmakers, fishermen, photographers, teachers, architects, doctors, busy working mums and pretty much anyone who ever finds themself with an idea they want to put to paper. The notebooks will be perfect-bound, with a natural cover made from 100% recycled cardboard, and will contain approximately 75 sheets of 80gsm 100% recycled plain white paper. The words "Keep Sketch" will be printed on the cover, as rendered by each of the four designers. The designers will be Ross Henderson (APT Designs), Dave Comiskey, Fuchsia Macaree and Karl Toomey (Synth Eastwood), and we're delighted to have them on board for the project.

As well as the notebooks, we are also offering our Keep Sketch pencils as rewards, alongside exclusive Keep Sketch badges designed by Philip Kennedy (Fieldwork / The Fox is Black), produced in a very limited run, and only available here. We will also be producing a very small run of hand screenprinted tote-bags designed by illustrator Mark Crawford, based on one of his own sketches which will again, only be available here.

Follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr to keep up to date with how the project is progressing, and to see previews of the designs as they are finished.

We just wanted to give everyone a quick update on how the project is progressing. Finally, we're very nearly there! Everything is coming together well, and we're taking delivery of all this amazing stationery right now. We're so excited to see this become a reality, and that w'll be able to send you out your rewards very soon. ***YOUR REWARD WILL BE READY TO POST IN THE NEXT WEEK TO TEN DAYS*** We've been working closely with our wonderful printers and binders, picking the perfect paper stocks and making sure everything is just right. Unfortunately though, we have a bit of bad news too, as due to unforeseen errors in the final printing stages, we have reluctantly had to drop the awesome Karl Toomey's design from the line-up. We tried everything we could to make it work, but unfortunately it was just not possible. We didn't want to compromise his wonderful design if there was going to be a risk that it wouldn't come out looking perfect, but sadly the risk was unavoidable. We're sad not to see it included but we are working on a way to share it with you in some other way, shape or form, so we will keep you posted! Of course, there will still be a fourth notebook design, this time designed by are own fair hand, and it's come out really nicely. We'll also be adding extra badges and other extras to make it up to you a little. We hope you can understand and forgive us for this unexpected blip! Thanks so much again for your support and patience! You'll hear again from us once more just to let you know that your reward is in the post. Cheers! Keep Sketch

There has been an incredible surge in support and pledges over the last two days... Thank you all so much! We're currently at 61% and still have a fair way to go over the next 4 days before the project ends, but it's seeming all the more possible after the support that the 79 of you have given. In case you haven't seen them already, check out Mark Crawford's wonderful tote-bag design (best viewed large): http://keepsketchrulesok.tumblr.com/post/9956574373/screen-printed-tote-bag-designed-by-mark-crawford And Philip Kennedy's beautifully minimal, hand-drawn type badges: http://keepsketchrulesok.tumblr.com/post/9952630769/check-out-these-beautifully-minimal-keep-sketch We'll be posting Ross Henderson's Notebook design later today, which will be followed by Karl Toomey's design very soon. Thanks again for your support! Keep Sketch

In case anyone hasn't already seen it on Facebook, Twitter, or Tumblr, we're delighted to post the cover design for the first our of four Keep Sketch notebooks, as illustrated by the awesome Fuchsia Macaree! She based her cover on the neighbourhood of Gowanus in Brooklyn, NY where she is living and working for the summer. "It's full of overpasses and water towers and old factories and scrap yards and warehouses (and that's my house and next door in the bottom right corner)." We're huge fans of Fuchsia's work, and very happy to have her on board the project with such a great piece of work. Big thanks to our first 23 funders who have brought us to 15% of our target in the first week of the project being live. Obviously we have a bit of a way to go, but your interest and support at this early stage has been a massive boost to us, and is getting us even more excited about the project. Be sure to follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr if you are not already, and keep up to date with how the project is progressing: http://www.facebook.com/KeepSketchRulesOK http://twitter.com/keepsketch http://keepsketchrulesok.tumblr.com W have lots of things are coming together at the moment, so we'll have updates, news and previews very soon.
