No Messages

By Cian McGarrigle

description

Set in The Thomas House - Dublin 8, No Messages follows one day in the life of Dave, a barman who's stuck in emotional limbo. He's expecting an important phone call but arrives at work to discover that not only has he left his phone at home but his boss is asleep behind the bar. So begins a long day of hangover cures, irritating regulars and attempts to keep the toilets "for customer use only". And while Dave checks and rechecks his voicemail from the pub phone he finds that sometimes when you're drifting aimlessly that much-needed kick up the arse can come when you least expect it. The soundtrack will include music by upcoming Irish bands including So Cow and Junior85.

Based on an idea conceived over pints one night in The Thomas House itself, No Messages is a short film whose script clocks in at 20 pages long. Too long for traditional funding routes we've decided to look for assistance from you (yes you reading this right now!) in getting it off the ground. And we want you to be part of the film too!

While we've managed to secure the services of many talented people so far who are willing to work for nothing, there are a lot of things that we just can't manage to scrounge up for free so all the money raised will be used to rent the necessary camera and sound equipment, feed our hard-working no-pay crew and pay for the rest of the shoot's expenses - including insurance, transport costs and marketing. After the film is shot the remaining money will be used to pay for post-production which will include renting an edit suite, getting a colour grade and sound mix done and also producing promotional DVDs and Blu-Rays to send out to festivals and to you, our funders. We plan to submit the film to all the major Irish film festivals, including Galway, Cork and Foyle as well as key international festivals.

The shoot will take place in late October and we plan to finish post-production by January 2012. The premiere will be held in a Dublin city centre location in February 2012. If you receive an invite as part of your reward we will contact you by email with all the details of the screening.

Thanks for your help!

Writer/Director - Cian McGarrigle.
Cian is a director, stand-up comedian and award-winning playwright. He's directed short films, music videos and advertisements. But this will be the first film he has directed from his own script.

Eoin Lynch will produce the film for Tengger Productions.

The main role of Dave will be played by Rory Connolly.
Rory is a Dublin based actor and writer. He is one fifth of comedy team Diet of Worms. On stage Rory has appeared in the play Strollinstown and the forthcoming CULT. No Messages - awards/reviews

Just a quick update to let you all know how No Messages is doing out on the festival circuit. Having premiered at the Galway Film Fleadh in July of this year the film has gone on to screen at Cambridge Film Festival, NYC International Film Festival, Underground Film Festival, Waterford Film Festival & Corona Cork Film Festival. The next international screening for the film takes place in December at the Bronx International Film Festival. At the Underground Cinema Awards in Dun Laoghaire this September No Messages won the Best Screenplay Award while at the Waterford Film Festival it was the runner-up in the Best Short category. In his write up of the Cork Film Festival Irish Times film critic Donald Clarke picked out No Messages for praise saying: "Cian McGarrigle’s No Messages seemed to have a slightly different, ahem, message for commissioning editors. Detailing conversations – some idiotic, some accidentally profound – in a sleepy urban pub, the picture looked like the pilot for a situation comedy that you might actually want to watch. The acting was confident. The jokes were secure. Suggestions of Kevin Smith’s Clerks were not hard to locate." Once again thank you for helping make the film a reality and for supporting independent filmmaking in Ireland. No Messages Team.

Film finished. Thanks to all our funders.

No Messages is finished and after a few cast/crew/funders screenings we're ready to launch it out into the world of film festivals. Here's the trailer: http://vimeo.com/37409936

We've broken the 1k mark

A bit later than expected we've broken the 1,000 euro mark. Now onto the final push to make the finish line. We've got dozens and dozens of actors trying out for the various roles tomorrow in Filmbase and have a few more well known names up our sleeves that we can't reveal just yet! Thanks to everyone who's funded us so far, we really appreciate all the help.

20% there and auditions!

A week into our campaign and we're over 20% of the way to our target of 3,000 euro. A huge thank you to everyone who has contributed so far. With only the lead role of the film so far cast we're anxious to get word out to as many actors as possible - there are over 10 speaking parts in the film! So today we've confirmed our first day of auditions which will take place in Filmbase on Saturday 24th of September. Kicking off around 10am. If you or anybody you know would like to audition please contact me cianmcgarrigle@gmail.com for more information. That's all for now - please help us spread the word about this exciting project! Cian.
