Personal safety using your smartphone

By Safe Amigos

Originally this service was conceived as a smartphone solution to help employers protect 'lone workers' and meet their 'Duty of Care' obligations towards their staff.

However, during market research, we obtained feedback from lots of parents asking if the solution could also be used to help protect their children, themselves, their extended families and friends.

Over the past year, we have worked with Maynooth University Corporate Entrepreneurship students and students in the Masters in Marketing programme to undertake in-depth research into the market for the service.

Extensive design reviews have been undertaken with potential consumers, college, and business customers to fine tune the service to make it as reliable and easy to use as possible.

We have successfully obtained funding from Enterprise Ireland and have used it to undertake software research with Athlone Institute of Technology to ensure that we will have a robust, scalable and secure solution.

Funding obtained here will be used to deliver 2 key features in the commercial release:

  1. Setting a timer on your smartphone before undertaking an activity such as walking to your car, locking up at work, visiting a client, or travelling alone.  Unless you cancel your timer when reminded to do so, an alert with your location will be raised with people you know and trust so they can arrange help.
  2. If you ever feel under immediate threat or simply fall ill, you can trigger an emergency alert on your smartphone which will be sent along with your location to people you know and trust.

The software is planned for release on 31 March 2019 at which point you will receive a code to download and unlock the software.

Our Goal

Our big goal is to protect children, reduce gender-based violence, and violence against those marginalised in society.

Reasons for Crowdfunding

The two key reasons for crowdfunding are:

  1. We need to know if people want the service we are going to offer and are willing to pay for it.
  2. Funding will be used to develop and deploy v2.1 of the software for full commercial release.

Smartphone software will account for 50% of the funding raised. 40% will go towards additional cloud software and the remainder will be used for other business operating expenses.

The key risk is non-delivery of the software but multiple small deliverables and very detailed specifications combined with over 30 years experience in the software industry, mean we have the knowledge, skills and experience to deliver the vision of making the world a safer place for children, teens, young adults, women, and men.  Uniquely our solution can also be used to provide peace of mind for any staff that work on their own at any point during their working day.

We are passionate about the benefits Safe Amigos to society.  We would like to thank you for your pledge and can reassure you about our utter commitment to deliver the best solution possible to you.

Feel Safer - Be Safer - Live Safer

Thank you to everyone that supported this initiative

I would like to say a major thank you to everyone the supported this project.

Although it didn't generate a significant number of monetary pledges, there were so many people that offered support in other ways.

Fortunately, other funding mechanisms have come into play so this is not the end of the journey but the beginning.

Thunderbirds are Go!

After a lot of research and hard work, the campaign to secure pre-sale pledges for Safe Amigos is now live on FundIt.

This funding will be used to help reduce gender-based violence, protect our children, and enable employers meet their Duty of Care responsibilities to keep staff as safe as is reasonably possible.

Each pledge makes a difference and helps us achieve our goal, so I am asking for your pledges.

Apologies to anyone under a certain age who doesn't know who Thunderbirds are!
