ROPES is an annual literary journal produced by the students of the MA in Literature and Publishing at NUI Galway. The publication is not a part of our assessment as it is purely a labour of love by people who are not only passionate about literature but creativity in all its forms. When it first started, the journal was limited to primarily NUI Galway students and faculty and was printed in black and white. However, since then we’ve grown bigger and better every year, expanding submissions to include not only Galway, but people from around the world. Our team is committed to showcasing both new and established literary and artistic talent in ROPES. We hope to include all types of genres from short stories and poetry to illustrations and photography — we’ll even have colour printing! This year w3e will be publishing our 25th edition.
Our theme this year is Silence. This theme resonated strongly with everyone and we felt that it would produce the most interesting content. The journal is a collaborative effort [19 students] and allows us as prospective publishers the opportunity to work alongside compelling authors and artists.
Each year we choose a charity to support the book and for this year’s edition we chose Pieta House. Pieta House offers a safe environement of support where people who are engaging in self harm and those who are contemplating suicide can talk about their experiences. They employ over 180 therapists and administration staff who tirelessly work to help people struggling with depression.
However, as passionate and inspired as we are, we need your help to bring our journal to life. This endeavour is entirely self-funded, and while we have the support of several groups who have bought advertising space in ROPES 2017, we have big plans for this year’s edition! To cover our production costs we hope to raise €400 through this Fund it campaign. Your pledges will help cover the costs of printing the book and will allow us to create a physical copy that can be sold in local book shops. All proceeds from selling this book will be given directly to Pieta House.
By contributing to ROPES 2017, you will not only help us showcase some amazing literary and artistic talent, but you will also help support the work of a great charity. You will also receive some neat rewards for your contribution, such as copy of ROPES or a handwritten invitation to this years launch.
