ROPES is a literary journal produced by the students of the MA in Literature and Publishing at NUI Galway. It’s not a part of our assessment, as it’s purely a labour of love by people who are not only passionate about literature but creativity in all its forms. When it first started, it was limited to mainly NUI Galway students and faculty and printed in black and white. However, since then we’ve grown bigger and better every year, expanding submissions to include not only Galway, but people from around the world. Our team is committed to showcasing both new and established literary and artistic talent in ROPES. We hope to include all types of genres from short stories and poetry to illustrations and photography — we’ll even have colour printing! This will be our 24th edition.
Our theme this year is independence in all its guises. This theme was chosen as we quickly realised that each member of our group had a different understanding of what it means to be independent. Our theme will also coincide with the centenary of the 1916 Easter Rising, which is just around the corner!
Every year we choose a charity to support and this year’s edition is in aid of the Galway Simon Community. The Simon Community provides housing, support and health care services for people who have become homeless or are at risk of becoming homeless in the West of Ireland. This is a vital service as being homeless is more than not having a roof over your head: it’s a lack of security, a lack of belonging, a lack of privacy and a lack of safety. That’s why all proceeds from the sale of this journal will go to the Galway Simon Community, we won’t keep a penny!
However, as passionate and inspired as we are, we need your help to bring our journal to life. This endeavour is entirely self-funded, and while we have the support of several groups who have bought advertising space in ROPES, we have big plans for this year’s edition! To cover our production costs we would like to raise €1,500 through Fund It. By contributing to ROPES 2016, you will not only help us showcase some amazing literary and artistic talent, but you will also help support the work of a great charity. You’ll also receive some cool rewards, such as a copy of ROPES or a handwritten invitation to our launch.
ROPES submissions are open to everyone: if you can create it, we’re interested in it! The deadline for submissions is the 18th of December if you would like to submit your work to ROPES2016.firstname.lastname@example.org.
