The Big Upcycle is an event designed to promote the upcycling movement in Ireland. It will consist of a weekend market & talks from the makers & designers 23rd - 25th Aug in Stillorgan Park Hotel, Dublin.
The market will give Irelands upcyclers a platform to showcase, promote and sell their work and to open peoples eyes to all the possibilities that upcycling brings. Up & coming upcyclers will be given the opportunity to showcase their product on the Big Starter Stall - encouraging new environmentally creative businesses to start & to grow. The Big Upcycle will launch on 23rd Aug with an evening of talks from the makers & an exhibition of our Upcycled Competition finalists. We will be holding this competition on the run up to our launch. Submissions must be a minimum of 80% upcycled materials and will be judged by a panel. For more details and to enter our competition log on to www.theupcyclemovement.com
This launch will be an exciting start to The Big Upcycle Market. We aim to hold our market on a regular basis, giving a solid platform to Irelands Upcyclers & encouraging others to buy upcycled goods.
Our Fund it campaign will help us cover start-up costs. We want to ensure we put on the best event we possibly can for all involved, There is a lot of programming, co-ordination & organisation involved in such an event & we hope to raise enough money to fund all the work that is required. We are campaigning for the minimum we will need & every cent funded is hugely appreciated. We cannot wait to showcase the creativity out there and the clever designs & solutions that have been born from upcycling!
About us: The forces behind The Big Upcycle are Lynn Haughton & Gwen Jeffares
Lynn is a self confessed horder with a love of creating something new from something with a past. She has a background in Interior Design & updates properties for the sales & rental market. Horrified by what others considered useless during renovations, Lynn set about rescuing & transforming these unwanted items. With a strong passion to shift societys mindset towards a more resourceful approach to waste, Lynn set up www.theupcyclemovement.com to promote the global movement & inspire others by the endless design possibilites & waste solutions.
Gwen is a costume designer who remakes and restyles vintage clothing & headwear under the label of 'Stitches be Crazy' In 2012 Gwen noticed a lack of quality outlets for high-end craftspeople within her own locality & decided to organise her own Artisan Gift Fair - Boutique Bray. It was during these markets that she noticed that many of the traders were talented Upcyclers even though many of them would have been unfamiliar with the term & it was then she wanted to boost upcycling to make it a household concept. The pair recogonised they were a good match to join forces & showcase upcycling and to bring its message to a larger audience.
Thanks very much for taking the time to read about The Big Upcycle!
