When the young widowed Duchess defies her brothers' wishes and remarries in secret, she marries a commoner and unleashes a horrible revenge from her family which exposes the whole corrupt misogynist society in which she lives.
Theatrecorp has been in existence for 10 years and is dedicated to the production of World Classics. The company, in conjunction with the Town Hall Theatre Galway, who have assisted with funding and organised tours over the last decade, has produced Lorca, Marlowe, Beckett, Genet, Cocteau and most recently Shakespeare with their production of Measure For Measure.
The company is also partnered with Nui Galway, who provide support, and in return, the production provides a valuable resource for the many students studying this play, who get to actually see a live production of a studied text and with a valuable post show discussion. In addition, it provides some of the drama students with some handson production experience. The company involves actors from the West Coast or those who live here. Designer Mary Doyle and Michael Byrne [lighting designer] are the regular designers.
The play is directed by Max Hafler.
"Directed by Max Hafler, the play was a revelation. It honours and defines the concept of theatre.' Irish Times on Max's production of The Trial
"Hafler’s direction extracted powerful nuances which politicised the work and updated its relevance.......a production that was engaging and entertaining...pushing against conservative assumptions of what Measure for Measure can be about." Irish Theatre Magazine
Our production of MEASURE was rehearsed through the Chekhov Technique. Its power to create palpable atmospheres was a main impact of using this work.
Check out www.theatrecorp.org for a full history of the company.
Also, check out Shakespeare’s Galway, a film project on Youtube of nine short films filmed by Treelight films, which unites Shakespeare with the atmosphere of our extraordinary city.
OUR CROWDFUNDING GOAL
Whilst looking for a contribution towards production costs, we are looking forward to involving people in the work and engaging them through FB updates and blogposts. there will be a piece about the rhearsal journey on our webpage so you can get some idea of the process as we go on.
We have not tried to do anything fancy with our Rewards. We are offering what we know we can provide. Programmes, invitation to the cheese and wine reception etc. The largest Reward does offer to a business funder, presentation and voice classes by Max Hafler, the play's director, who has led many courses at NUI Galway and UL in this area. You can see the full list to the left.
Thank you for taking the time to read this and we hope you enjoy the show.
