The graphic design of Paul Rand

By Curate & Design

description

'Don't try to be original, just try to be good.'
A Paul Rand exhibition at Gallery Number One
2nd November - 16th November 2012

MISSION

We love design. And we love sharing amazing design works with new fans and converted design fans. We started Curate and Design with a mission to stage quality and informative free shows in Dublin showing international and local design heroes. We have been praised in The Irish Times  and Le Cool. A show 'Less But Better' about Dieter Rams at the Exchange Gallery last April showed what we can do, and with your help, we would like to do it again! We are grateful for your funding and look forward to bringing this to life!

ABOUT PAUL RAND

Paul Rand transformed the way individuals and businesses think about graphic design. As a figurehead in the development of American graphic design, Paul Rand  (1914–1996) produced some of the most pioneering identities for companies such as IBM, UPS and ABC. Steve Jobs described him as ‘the greatest living graphic designer’. Rand taught design at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. He was inducted into the New York Art Directors Club Hall of Fame in 1972.

ABOUT THE SHOW

This free 2 week exhibition aims to introduce a new audience to the work of Paul Rand. It will tell the story of Rand's philosophy and takes you though his works from the early age of advertising through to modern identity design, showing his thinking and methods throughout. The show will comprise of the following:

– Approximately 10–15 original pieces by Paul Rand on display. (Book covers, posters, packaging, logo design manuals and posters)
– Commissioned limited edition print by brilliant Irish designer Johnny Kelly demonstrating the impact of Rand’s work on his own design ideology.
– Educational element with a free public lecture by a Rand specialist.

WHAT YOUR FUNDING MEANS TO US

The funding will go toward:

Exhibition content and loans: €730
Production of all promotional material and lithographic prints: €1500
Exhibition space design and build + a newly designed website resource, €500
A guest lecture, invited irish designer and an invigilator €790

We intend to stage the exhibition to coincide with Design Week Dublin. The main purpose of Design Week is to highlight the important contribution good design makes to the cultural and economic life of Ireland through fostering a reputation for creative excellence and innovation.

We are commissioning a special piece by Johnny Kelly. Our last commission for 'Less But Better' was by Conor and David. This poster has now been requested for acquisition by the Art Institute of Chicago.

Please tell your family, friends and colleagues to get funding today so that we can reach our target and make it happen! Thanks again, Shane & James ---------------------- www.curateanddesign.com

The First Week

Hi One week in and it's been an amazing reaction so far, so a big big thank you to all of you and for your interest in Paul Rand's work. We are 31% funded so it's going really well. We're still busy researching and sourcing lovely things to show from Rand's extensive career. We are pleased to announce that Yale University (who hold a significant collection of Paul Rand's work) are willing to give us access to some of his most famous posters including the wonderful Eye Bee M. So expect a beautiful range for the Dublin show if we hit out target! Secondly, we thought it would be cool to give you an exclusive snippet of a former student of Rand, Jeff Piazza, who is collaborating with us on this project. Jeff is the Brooklyn based head of Behaviour Design, and is kindly sharing his first-hand experience with us of Rand as a design educator... "I was a Third-year Art student studying design at The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in New York City. Paul Rand was teaching a class for the Special Projects program which is part of the Art School. The Special Projects class is where guest designers are invited to teach students for brief six-week sessions. He emphasized staying away from trends. At the time integrating ovals into logo designs was a big trend many students were in to. He steered us away from that and tried to get us to focus on fundamental geometric shapes. He was drawn to work that had a story behind the simple execution. He gave his honest opinion and would not hold back. If he did not like something he told you so and said why. A big part of his educational technique was to express the rational behind design criticism. That was the best way to learn. If he did like something he told you that too but that was a far shorter conversation..." Pt 2 to follow soon! That's it for now, keep getting the word out and thanks again!! ------------------------ Shane & James.

The first 48 hours...

Hi folks Wow, it's been a great start for us, €700 raised and 14% funded. Thanks to all of you for funding and getting behind us so quickly! Just realised that the project launched on Paul Rand's birthday yesterday- (August 15th, 1914)..completely by chance! So, a good sign.. Make sure you tell a friend and have a great weekend. Cheers Shane & James www.curateanddesign.com
