The Gunslinger is an upcoming narrative short film production from Writer/Director Cailan O'Connell, and his diverse crew of talented student filmmakers; which attempts to pay tribute to Revisionist, Classicist and Spaghetti Western styles. Juxtaposing the harsh realism of Deadwood and Unforgiven against the stark romanticism of Sergio Leone and John Ford, the project aims to act as a stylistic anthology of the western genre, cataloguing it's evolution even through the narrative progression of the film which moves between the golden age of the frontier in the mid 1800s and it's decline in the early 20th century. Dealing with strong themes of violence, innocence, heroism and villainy; the film promises to be the director's most entertaining and provocative piece to date.
Filming will take place from August 24th to the 30th 2012. The team will spend September/October working on editing, music and preparation for distribution of our excellent rewards (including DVDs, Soundtracks etc.), which is to take place in the latter half of 2012. The Film will be placed on the festival circuit throughout 2012 and 2013, going into general DVD and online distribution throughout late 2013.
The film follows the story of an old man who, as death closes in, looks back from the cold expanse of the dying plains to the climactic event of his youth which shaped the person he was to become. With the rising narrative crescendo we watch as a hero is born and dies on the barren frontier.
The purpose of this project however is not merely to create a great narrative film but one that can be used as a portfolio piece in furthering the work and education of all involved. As such, it is important that the piece portray a level of professionalism, production value and organizational ability that cannot be attained without your help. If this project is to be made possible, we will require funding in order to feed and transport our cast (including horses!), rent equipment and source quality costumes and props. So please, support the project now on fundit.ie.
Funding received through The DU Film Society and The Visual and Performing Arts fund has gone to the purchase of essential items of equipment, all finance raised through fundit.ie will go to props, costumes, horses, transport, food and the rental of a RED cinema kit for use on the production of the film.
