The Hidden World of Poetry

By Adam Wyeth

description

I am trying to raise enough money for the publication of my book, The Hidden World of Poetry: unravelling Celtic mythology in contemporary Irish poetry.

The book is already written and I even have Agenda (UK) - a leading independent poetry publisher who are going to publish the book. The problem is that with recent Arts Council cutbacks, Agenda do not have the budget. This is where you come in. I need 3,500euro to cover publishing costs.

The Hidden World of Poetry is a unique book - for lovers of poetry and for readers new to it - that unravels the many rich and varied ancient Celtic legends through contemporary Irish poetry. Each chapter begins with a poem by one of Ireland’s leading contemporary poets, which is then commentated on. Introducing first the poet, and then going into detail the making of the poem and its references. As well as illuminating the inner workings of poetry, the reader will discover a wealth of Celtic myths, their gods, heroes and folklore, as well as insights into ancient Celtic society.

Poets included: Paul Muldoon, Eavan Boland, Seamus Heaney, Derek, Mahon, Leanne O'Sullivan, Paul Durcan, Paula Meehan, Matthew Sweeney, Eilean Ni Chuilleanain, Bernard O'Donoghue, Patricia Monaghan, Maurice Riordan and Nuala Ni Dhomhnail.

By delving into the poet’s words and unravelling the myths and legends, these accessible close readings reveal how Ireland’s ancient Celtic culture still plays a part which is central to our identity today. Through The Hidden World of Poetry you will get to the bottom of language and bring to light why poetry is central to Irish culture and remains today to be one of the highest expressions of art.

'Wyeth’s book gives sharp and shrewd readings of contemporary poems, revealing mythic and folkloric underpinnings that might not be immediately obvious to the non-specialist reader. I believe this book will be a useful contribution to Irish Studies and fully support its funding.'
Patricia Monaghan, Professor of Interdisciplinary Studies at DePaul University, Chicago.

‘Adam Wyeth is a gifted commentator/close reader. A hearer and heartener, to quote a phrase from Yeats.’ Seamus Heaney
