The Tide

By Tara Maria Lovett

The Tide is a new piece of Irish writing that tells the story of Ivy and JC and unlikely pair who meet on a beach while waiting for a drowned man to be taken in from the water. They have dreams and desires and are deeply unhappy with their current lives. She dreams of having a sea god as a lover and he dreams of driving in the Monte Carlo rally. Who knows how far one will go for a dream? Ivy and JC go along with the tide but the voyage and the water get very dark.

We are delighted that with the support of the New theatre and Whirligig productions The Tide will be playing At the New Theatre from 19.2.19 - 2.3.19.

I am an award winning playwright and have been awarded The Fingal Scribe 2000, The OZ Whitehead Playwrighting Award 2001, The Sean Dunne Literary Award 2002, The Eamon Keane New Play Award at Listowel Writers Week 2002. I have also been shortlisted for an Irish Times New Theatre Award in 2002, and for the PJ O’Connor Radio Play Award in 2012.

This project has attracted the support and dedication of a superb cast and crew. I have had five previous professional productions and the cast and crew have a wealth of theatre experience. We are all passionate about bringing new writing to the stage and along with the support of The New theatre and Whirligig theatre as joint partners this project has become a reality.

The challenge will be to achieve the quality of production which we all have ambitions for with the funds available. The Fund it monies will help us achieve this. The quality of the design and look of this play to enhance the audience experience is very important to us. We want the audience to feel the chill of the water and sense that at any moment a seagull could just land on them. To this end we are asking for you help with the funding of the technical aspects of the work to include:

Sound design

Costume design

Lighting design

Set design

I would like to thank you all for your support in helping me bring some of my new writing to the Irish stage. Plays only live in front of an audience. Without your support none of us would get to find out what The Tide will bring in.
