Thru-hike Ireland

By Conor Houlihan

description

Hi my name is Conor Houlihan.

I recently completed a Thru - Hike of the Appalachian Trail (2181 miles) in America. Thru Hiking is hiking a long distance trail end to end. It is a really beautiful way of seeing the world - Ireland is my home and I wish to see and experience it in this way.

Marta Krolik, the cinematographer is from Poland, it is her first time in Ireland and this is her first thru- hike..

We intend to create a 15 - 30 minute film of our 1200km hike around Ireland in January and Febuary of 2013.

Starting at the Spire on O' Connell Street in Dublin we will hike south towards Rathfarnham where we will join the Wicklow Way, this will be followed by: The South Leinster Way, East Munster Way, Blackwater Way, Beara Way, Kerry Way, (hopefully the Skelligs) Dingle Way, Burren Way, The Aran Islands, the Western way and finally we will finish our hike on the summit of Croagh Patrick.

Why we are doing this?

1.We wish to capture the wild and rugged landscapes of Ireland in the winter time, and the warmth of the Irish people.

2.We want to capture the feeling and the experience, the dynamics and the adventure of a Thru-hike.

3.Ireland needs a long distance trail - such a trail could attract thousands of hikers to Ireland each year, we thought this would be a good route so we need to hike it and see for ourselves.

The money raised will help us with covering some of the essential costs: flights from Poland for Martha (150 euro), a memory card bank (100 euro) food (600 euro) , we are using a Canon 5D MARK 2, but we would also really like a GoPro (400 euro) - this would really help a lot!!!!!.

Clothing and accomodation (750 euro) - We need to buy some extra clothes (WOOL TERMALS) for the cold weather and one more tent, we need a small amount to cover some accomodation costs although we will sleep mostly in our tents and shelters, we will stay with friends and family where possible and do couchsurfing too. We hope to stay with the travelling community, a Tibetan Buddhist Retreat Centre and spend a week on the Aran Islands.

We believe that this is going to be an incredible journey and it will make a very beautiful film about hiking in Ireland. Please try and support us if you feel the same.
