Hi, this is Anna from Ergodos. I'm working on a new production we're putting together called Two Operas. I'm helping to get this wonderful multimedia production off the ground and into the theatre, and while the composers are devoting their energies to writing the most beautiful music they can, I would like to tell you about Two Operas, and why we need your help.
Two Operas is, well, two new operas, by Irish composers Benedict Schlepper-Connolly and Garrett Sholdice. They are seeking to redefine opera for the modern audience, combining music, film and dance to create an experience of feeling and atmosphere. Their idea of opera is a truly contemporary one: minimal, intuitive, immersive. Their music is very beautiful while still being exciting, and we want as many people as possible to experience it.
The two operas are very different:
Benedict Schlepper-Connolly's Heimat, which features the choreographer and dancer Liv O’Donoghue, focuses on the experience of modern-day nomads — the emigrant, the drifter, the commuter. Fast and loud, the performance layers interviews, film and song to reveal ideas about rootedness and belonging.
Garrett Sholdice's Recueillement, as the French title intimates, is a more gentle, contemplative piece, with choreography by Silja Thomsen, film by Krishan Hukam and the mezzo-soprano Michelle O’Rourke. Imagine dusk, two women, the ritual of Javanese gamelan music, the yearning words of Charles Baudelaire, a sense of changing light.
Two Operas will take place at the Project Arts Centre in Dublin on August 24th and 25th.
The money we raise here will help us cover all the associated costs of putting on a show such as this, from venue hire, posters, programmes, and most importantly, the production itself from sets to equipment. The venues are booked, the musicians are rehearsing, and the composers are still scribbling...we just need one more push to make Two Operas into the full stage production it deserves to be.
